The standard method for updating RFID firmware requires the device to temporarily operate as a USB mass storage device.
During the update, a special command is sent to the RFID reader. When reconnected, the device is recognized by the operating system as a USB flash drive. The existing firmware file is removed, the new firmware file is copied to the device, and the device reconnects to complete the update.
Limitation of the Standard Update Method
Corporate security policies in some environments block USB mass storage devices. If security policy disables USB flash drives, the standard RFID firmware update cannot be used because the RFID reader is not accessible as a USB storage device.
Updating RFID Firmware Using DFU
In environments that restrict USB mass storage devices, an alternative firmware update method based on DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) is available. DFU updates the RFID firmware without requiring the device to be mounted as a USB flash drive.
Note: DFU update is supported starting with RFID firmware version 23.07. The RFID reader must already have firmware version 23.07 or later to use this procedure.
For more information about the USB Device Firmware Upgrade mechanism, see the USB-IF Device Firmware Upgrade Class Specification 1.1 (PDF).
Obtaining the DFU Upgrade Instructions and Files
The DFU upgrade instructions and all required files are provided upon request.
Contact Regula Support to request the DFU upgrade package. The Support team first checks whether your device supports DFU mode. If DFU is supported, you receive the required files and detailed instructions for performing the upgrade. It is best to indicate that you need device with DFU support prior to making a purchase order.
